Humor and Jokes of the Prophet Muhammad SAW

Prophet Muhammad SAW is a perfect human person forever. All his actions are in accordance with the revelation from Allah SWT. However, the figure of the Prophet Muhammad is not a scary, fierce, and vicious figure. The son of Aminah's mother is very soft-hearted and becomes an incomparable role model.

In some moments, Rasulullah SAW often joked with his friends. Siti Fatimah's father's joke is not like a stand-up comedy which is trendy nowadays, but a polite one, full of advice, not lying and insulting. It is narrated in a hadith narration, that there was a man who asked the Prophet Muhammad SAW to take him on a vehicle. Then, Rasulullah SAW said, "I will take you on a calf." The man was confused, because he only saw an adult camel, not a calf. Then, the Messenger of Allah continued with his words, "Isn't the one who gave birth to the camel a camel too?" (HR Abu Dawud dan Tirmidzi).

Humor as above does not contain insults, lies, and other despicable acts. It even inspires intelligence in analysis. No matter how big the camel is, it's still a camel's calf. The manifestation of this joke of the Prophet, as a person's status is good to be a general, he is still the son of his father and mother who must be respected.

Joking is a communication spice that is never separated in everyday social moments. Besides being able to entertain, lighten the atmosphere, relieve tension, and relieve anger, it is not uncommon for jokes to emerge the seeds of friendship and brotherhood. Once upon a time, Sufyan bin Uyainah was asked whether joking was a disgraceful act? He answered no, ''In fact, including sunnah for those who can condition it according to the rules.''

In several explanations it is stated that laughing and crying are nature that Allah SWT has bestowed on every human being. Rasulullah SAW also mentioned that making other people happy can be called a virtue, "Your smile for your brother is a virtue (alms). (HR Imam Ahmad).

To create a humorous atmosphere, one must stay away from words and actions that are not commendable, such as dirty talk, lies, ridicule, and demeaning others just to get the laughter of others. The Prophet SAW said, "Woe to those who speak and then make up false stories so that others laugh." (Narrated by Abu Dawud). Apart from this being a despicable and sinful thing, the Messenger of Allah never joked with his companions, unless it contained truth and facts. We can find this in the hadith of Abu Hurairah RA that the companions asked, "O Messenger of Allah, indeed you have made fun of us." The Messenger of Allah replied, "Indeed I do not speak, except the truth." (HR Tirmidzi).

In addition to the hadiths above, the Prophet SAW once insulted an old grandmother who asked, "Will she go to heaven someday?" The Prophet replied, "There will be no grandmothers in heaven." Hearing that answer, spontaneously the grandmother wept, then the Prophet said to her that one day there will be no grandmothers because all the members of heaven will return young. Such is the joke of the Prophet Muhammad which is full of nuances of truth and advice for all his people.
